Often called caps, porcelain crowns cover the entire exposed portion of a tooth. There are several reasons for crown placement. Dr. Arun Garg, our Aventura dentist may place a dental crown to build back tooth structure after severe tooth decay has deteriorated your tooth. Crowns are stronger than fillings for keeping out bacteria from teeth with dental work. These porcelain crowns are fabricated in a ceramics lab to look like a natural tooth. Dental crowns are shaped with cuspids, crevices, and curvatures to mimic the shape of your teeth and blend seamlessly with your smile.
What are inlays and onlays?
A cross between a porcelain crown and a filling, inlays and onlays are made with porcelain like dental crowns, and serve the same function of a conservative filling. These are beneficial for teeth with excessive decay and patients with bruxism. An inlay fills a cavity of a tooth with custom shaped ceramics. For more extensive repairs, onlays fill a cavity and lay over the cusp of a tooth, replacing more tooth structure. Unlike fillings, inlays and onlays require fabrication in a ceramics lab, therefore placement may take an additional office visit. However, the benefit of an inlay or onlay is conservation of as much tooth structure as possible with the strength of higher quality material.
How do I know if I need a filling?
Unfortunately, there is not distinct symptom that will notify you that you have a cavity. While tooth sensitivity, bad breath, a chipped tooth, and toothache are common symptoms of tooth decay, not all cavities will present signs such as these. The best way to know if you need a filling is to schedule regular dental checkups. Out Aventura dentist offers several diagnostic services to detect even the smallest amount of tooth decay so that you can benefit from the most conservative restorative dentistry procedures.
